During the month of September, we made our pledge to the Subaru Loves Learning initiative by working with the Thirman L. Milner School in Hartford to increase attendance rates! How would a car dealership help increase attendance rates, you may ask? It all started with a single phone call to the school at the beginning of September to offer our assistance in any way we can. That’s when we learned about Milner’s Family Initiative, The Positive Behavior Incentive System, which has been very successful over the last few years. Through this program, students, parents/guardians, and teachers are building a more cohesive community. The incentives offered through this program encourage both students and their parent/guardian to take a major role in being accountable for their student’s academics, attendance, and overall behavior.

We learned that the school’s first incentive of this school year was going to be a free ticket to the Big E for any student with perfect attendance and exemplary behavior, and that’s not all. Those same students also received an additional ticket for their parent/guardian if they were interested in coming. An incentive-based system that rewards students and parents/guardians for good behavior is something Bertera can get behind. We were then presented with the challenge of making this incentive even sweeter for the students involved. That’s when we learned that the school was only able to fundraise for the tickets and a limited amount of rides. We knew what had to be done, so we contacted the Big E and they were kind enough to help us provide one hundred eighty Midway Magic Passes to distribute to every single student with perfect attendance. These passes allowed the Milner students access to virtually every ride at the fair! Seeing the children’s smiles and hearing the laughter truly made all of this worth it! We’re so glad to have been able to be apart of such a wonderful school program. All of us here at Bertera look forward to our partnership and future endeavors with The Thirman L. Milner School.
